Mersey Ports Growth Strategy

The Mersey Ports Growth Strategy including Liverpool and Wirral Waterfront

The Liverpool Ports Growth Strategy will:

  • Create the political and economic environment to allow private sector investment to provide maximum economic and social benefit to Merseyside 
  • Ensure sufficient land will allow Merseyside to retain as many of the value added operations as possible 
  • Transform the local economy by building on the centre of excellence for logistics that already exists improving productivity through people, processes and technology

The Maritime Sector as an industry is delivering growth, prosperity and jobs to the region. The maritime business in Merseyside employ 19,000 people and contribute around £1.8 billion to the local economy. The Port Growth Strategy outlines the future plans based on demand from the industry to ensure that we meet their needs at the right time.

Liverpool SuperPort

The Superport's concept is not just infrastructure based but also includes innovation and long term planning. The concept brings together the broad infrastructure base in the City region comprising the Ports, Airports, inter modal terminals roads and rail freight facilities. The concept will assist with the development of best practice and especially how environmental issues can be incorporated in to practices. Port of Liverpool - Seaforth Triangle

Port of Liverpool - SeaforthThe Seaforth Triangle is a £90m deep-sea terminal development to facilitate the birthing of post-Panamax vessels. This is an important development as it will be the first deep-sea birth on the west coast of the UK. The terminal will be able to accommodate two post-Panamax ships at one time and has the capability to handle more than 500,000 TEUs pa.

The new terminal will be created by building a river wall from the Royal Seaforth Dock to Gladstone Dock and filling in the triangle to create a 17 hectare terminal. The scheme has been given approval by the Department for Transport and Peel Ports are currently developing the business case.
